Calgary Team Handball Member Spotlight

Iina & Emma Alanen

Hi, My  name is Iina and I'm 16 years old. I started playing handball when I was 10 because my really good friend on my soccer team played. I played handball in Finland for a club called Dicken for about 5 years. After moving to Canada in August 2019 I started playing for Calgary Team Handball, and in February 2020 I got invited to also play with Team Alberta. Last season (2019) with the Calgary team was super fun, we started off in the lower group, but worked our way to the higher one. I think our teamwork and the mindset of wanting to win helped us a lot and was a big reason why we got where we got. I don't think anyone expected our team to make it to the final if we look back at the start of the season. However, our team ended up getting there and placing second in the league. The whole season was really fun for me and I made a lot of new friends but also got to try playing centre back which I hadn't done before. Overall it was a great experience and I hope we will get a season this year to continue where we left on last time.

Hello, I'm Emma and I'm 13 years old. I started to play handball for Calgary Team Handball in the fall 2019 after we moved to Calgary from Finland. I didn't have any previous experience of handball but have now played for about 2 years. I started handball because I found it interesting as I went to watch my sister's games for several years back in Finland. In the 2019 Fall/Winter season I played with the society's U16 girls team. We made it to to final where we lost and ended up into second place. Additionally, I practiced with the Mini team and played in one tournament with them.
